Opening the Doors: ESA and Local Clubs Join Forces to Welcome Every Subbuteo Player

Updated: Jul 7

The English Subbuteo Association (ESA) is proud to be working closely with local clubs across the country to create more inclusive, welcoming opportunities for new, returning, and developing players. This summer, two standout events, Leicester’s Nomination Cup and Coventry's, Godiva Club’s Training Day, are leading the charge in proving that Subbuteo is a game for everyone, not just the seasoned tournament players.

Whether you’re rediscovering the game after decades away, nervously flicking your first figures, or simply looking for a relaxed environment to build your confidence, these events are exactly what the Subbuteo community needs, and you are warmly invited.

Leicester Foxes SC – Nomination Cup

Date: 29th June 2025

Venue: Aylestone Social Club, LE2 8LU

Start Time: 9:30 AM Entry

Fee: £8

The Nomination Cup, organised by Leicester Foxes Subbuteo Club, is a shining example of what a supportive, grassroots tournament can look like. Aimed specifically at players who might otherwise shy away from traditional competitive events, the format is relaxed yet spirited, welcoming anyone who:

  • Is new to Subbuteo

  • Is returning to the game after time away

  • Doesn’t regularly attend WASPA or FISTF tournaments

  • Plays occasionally but struggles to progress from group stages

  • Simply wants a fun, friendly flick in good company

This is your chance, or the perfect opportunity to nominate someone else, for a day where sportsmanship, encouragement, and community take centre stage. The format will be tailored to the number of entries, ensuring an enjoyable experience for all.

“More the merrier,” say the organisers, and they mean it.

Coventry Godiva SC – ESA Training Day

Date: Sunday 20th July 2025

Venue: Jaguar Social Club, Coventry

Entry Fee: £10

Hosted By: ESA in partnership with Coventry Godiva Subbuteo Club

On the same mission to break down barriers and build up confidence, Coventry’s Godiva SC is hosting a full-day training event that promises something for everyone, from total beginners to those looking to improve their tournament performance.

Leading the session is none other than Sam Curtis, one of England’s top players and a gifted coach. With his guidance, attendees will be taken through skills, drills, tactics and table-time, all in a welcoming and encouraging setting.

Michael Mayes, who is helping to coordinate the day, shared his enthusiasm:

“Not only is Sam a great player, but he’s a brilliant coach. This day will offer real value for anyone looking to improve.”

Godiva’s Graham Harwood added:

“We’re delighted to be hosting this event on behalf of the ESA. Places are limited, so don’t miss your chance to get involved.”

Creating Space for Everyone

These two events reflect a wider ambition across the ESA and its affiliated clubs: to create environments where everyone feels they belong. Whether you’re a future World Cup hopeful or just enjoy the sound of plastic on baize, there’s a place for you at the table.

We believe in growing the game from the ground up, and that means supporting all players, not just the ones who make the headlines.

So if you’ve ever thought about getting involved, whether it’s your first flick or your first in years, now’s your moment.

We’re also calling on Subbuteo clubs across England: if you’d like to host similar events that support new, returning, or developing players, the ESA wants to hear from you. Whether it’s a training day, a beginner-friendly tournament, or a casual club night with a welcoming atmosphere, we’re here to support you in making it happen.

And to players who would love to attend events like these, don’t hesitate to get in touch. Reach out to us through our social media channels or fill out the Contact Us form on the ESA website and we’ll point you in the right direction

Subbuteo is calling. Will you flick back?
