Goodman Strikes Again!

TEN players convergeD on March in Cambridgeshire ON sumday to contest Leg 7 of the ESA Old School Rules Championships.

Despite entries being affected by the clash with Father’s Day, players came from far afield including Hampshire, Notts, Surrey and Spain(!). As with all old school rules tournaments play was competitive but friendly and always played in the right spirit.

Players were split into two groups of five with Tony Kiely winning Group A and Tony banks edging out Colin Fletcher on goal difference to take second spot and Simon Goodman and Jeremy Boothman qualifying from Group B. In the semi-finals Simon narrowly defeated Surrey club mate Tony Banks on shots after a 1-1 draw with Tony Kiely defeating Jeremy Boothman 2-0 in the other match. In the final, Simon again triumphed on shots after a goaless draw with Tony K. Congratulations to Simon on his victory – he has been a machine this season, winning six of the seven championship legs. Simon’s win should not hide the closeness of the competition throughout with Jeremy, Tony B, Tony K all deservedly emerging from closely fought groups.

In the Plate competition, Adam Wells and Andy McGovern battled their way to the final, before Adam took the honours, coming back from behind to win 2-1.

A special thanks to John Turpin for running a well-organised tournament on the day and TO all players for making it a very enjoyable day.
